Summer is just around the corner, and the City of Burnaby is bringing back a beloved event for music lovers: the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival. Now in its 22nd year, the festival has been a staple of the outdoor music scene in British Columbia, and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better than ever before.

Scheduled for August 12, 2023, the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival will be held at Deer Lake Park, and the best part? Admission is free. That’s right, music fans from all walks of life can come out and enjoy a full day of live music without breaking the bank.

Over the years, the festival has hosted an impressive lineup of award-winning artists, including Robert Cray, Colin James, Smokey Robinson, k.d. lang, Nathaniel Rateliff, Feist, and The War on Drugs. This year’s lineup will be announced in the spring, so stay tuned for more details on who you can expect to see on stage.

In addition to great music, the 2023 festival will feature a range of signature attractions and amenities, such as the family zone, food trucks, and more. Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to volunteer, so if you’re interested in getting involved, keep an eye out for more information in the coming months.

According to Mayor Mike Hurley, the decision to make admission free was all about creating a welcoming environment for the community. “The Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival is one of the most exciting events that we host in Burnaby,” he said. “By removing ticket fees, we’re ensuring that everyone in our community will have the chance to come down to Deer Lake Park and enjoy a fantastic day of music with friends and family.”

Not only is the festival a celebration of roots and blues music, but it also encourages cultural awareness of musical talent and provides a platform for local and Canadian artists, with a particular focus on ensuring that female and BIPOC artists are represented.

As summer approaches, music lovers in Burnaby and beyond can look forward to a day of amazing live music, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere at the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival. Mark your calendars for August 12, 2023, and get ready for a day you won’t forget.
