Burnaby athletes shine at the 2023 Canada Winter Games
Athletes from Burnaby made a strong contribution to Team BC’s record medal haul at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.
The BC contingent won a record 103 medals – 42 of them gold – at the 2023 Games, topping the province’s previous high of 88 medals won at both the Halifax 2011 and Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games. BC earned third spot in the PEI overall medal count behind Quebec and Ontario.
Burnaby athletes won nine medals in badminton, judo, squash and table tennis.
“We congratulate all BC athletes for their sport achievements at the 2023 Canada Winter Games,” said Robyn Hughes, Director, Sport Burnaby. “And we are sending a special shout out to the athletes from Burnaby who proudly represented our city in PEI.” Hughes was part of Team BC’s Mission Staff at the Red Deer 2019 Winter Games.
Burnaby hometown medallists
Raphael Gaanan earned a gold medal in judo individual 60-kg male and a bronze in the male team event. “Oh, it’s awesome!” said Gaanan. “Like, my phone home screen has been the PEI gold medal for months now. So everyday when I wake up, that would be the first thing that I would see. And now, I see it in person. There are no words that can explain how happy I am to be able to do this.”
Sofia Li won three bronze medals in table tennis – in the doubles mixed event, the team female event and female singles event. “I was very, very excited,” said Li. “Overall, the entire event, the entire games, will be something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
Louise Fan won a bronze medal in the table tennis team female event.
Harrison Yang was part of the BC’s gold-medal winning team competition male event in squash.
Jadon Kai Hay Tsang won two bronze medals in badminton for the mixed team and male doubles events. “This is my first Canada Games,” said Tsang. “Definitely having two bronze medals is an amazing feeling and an amazing opportunity.”
