Burnaby’s Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre is once again bringing the vibrant traditions of Japan to life with the 12th annual Nikkei Matsuri. This much-anticipated event, a cornerstone of cultural celebration, will take place from Friday, August 30, through Sunday, September 1, 2024. With its unique blend of cultural experiences, food, games, performances, and shopping, Nikkei Matsuri offers an immersive and family-friendly environment for everyone to enjoy.

Admission is free for those under 18, over 65, and for members, while adults can enjoy the festivities for $10, with a discounted $8 advance ticket option available.

WHEN AND WHERE?

The 12th annual Nikkei Matsuri will be held at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, located at 6688 Southoaks Crescent in Burnaby. The festival kicks off with the Matsuri Eve Zenyasai Beer Garden on Friday, August 30, from 4 pm to 10 pm, and continues over the weekend on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, from 11 am to 7 pm.

Why You Can’t Miss Matsuri This Year

Cultural Experiences
One of the highlights of Nikkei Matsuri is the chance to experience authentic Japanese cultural practices. Attendees can witness the lively Mikoshi procession and participate in the Bon Odori dance, a traditional Japanese folk dance performed around the festival’s Yagura tower. Yukata rentals will be available, allowing festival-goers to fully immerse themselves in the traditional atmosphere by wearing these beautiful Japanese garments.

Nikkei Matsuri is a feast for the senses, particularly when it comes to food. The festival will feature Yatai street food stalls and food trucks offering an array of Japanese festival delicacies. Special Guests and Performances

Nikkei Matsuri will feature an impressive lineup of special guests and performers, both local and international. Masaki Yogi, a master sanshin player from Miyako Island, Okinawa, will be present to exhibit, sell, repair, and perform on his traditional instrument. WA Studio KIWA, a kimono upcycling designer, will showcase a stunning stage performance and lead workshops. Mrs. Candy-G, a talented candy artist, will amaze audiences with her ability to transform soft candy into intricate edible animal figures.

The festival also boasts performances by local groups such as Appare Yosakoi Vancouver, Chibi Taiko, and Non Sweet, along with martial arts demonstrations from various dojos. The diverse performances ensure there’s something for everyone, from traditional Japanese dance to contemporary pop music.

Special Event: Matsuri Eve Zenyasai Beer Garden

Kick off the festival in style on Friday evening with the Matsuri Eve Zenyasai Beer Garden. From 4 pm to 10 pm, visitors can unwind under the glow of chochin lanterns and the towering Yagura. Enjoy cold beer, Japanese sake, and delectable festival foods while dancing to the rhythms of summertime house music—a perfect prelude to the weekend’s festivities.
