Lunar New Year is just around the corner, and Metropolis at Metrotown, BC’s largest shopping centre, is gearing up for a spectacular celebration of the Year of the Dragon. From February 9 to February 24, 2024, the shopping haven will be adorned with traditional displays, performances, and workshops, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Lunar New Year festivities. Here are eight exciting and lucky ways to make the most of this joyous occasion.

1. Shop & Receive Prosperity

Date & Time: February 9-24 (10 am – 9 pm)

Indulge in a shopping spree at Metropolis at Metrotown, and if you spend $288, you’ll receive a $25 gift card and a special Year of the Dragon memento. Additionally, visit the cherry blossom tree in the Grand Court, pick a red pocket, and find more surprises inside! For every red pocket chosen, Metropolis at Metrotown will donate $5 to Angels on Earth Society, a Burnaby-based charity providing culture education to students at no cost.

2. Marvel at the Lion Dance

Date & Time: February 14 (Starting at 10 am)

Witness the vibrant and lively Lion Dance performance in the Grand Court, spreading good luck and prosperity throughout Metropolis at Metrotown. The energetic parade is believed to chase away evil spirits, ensuring a positive start to the Lunar New Year.

3. Musical Bliss & Lucky Buddha

Date & Time: February 16 (12 pm – 2 pm)

Enjoy the enchanting sounds of the guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument with a rich history. Meet the Lucky Buddha, pose for photos, and receive red envelopes filled with good fortune. The festive music and lively atmosphere will set the tone for a prosperous year ahead.

4. Culinary Workshop Delights

Date & Time: February 17 (11 am, 12:30 pm, 2 pm, 3:30 pm)

Satisfy your culinary curiosity by joining a Lunar New Year culinary workshop. Learn the art of preparing traditional festive meals and, if you’re lucky, take home a delicious treat. It’s a flavourful way to wish for prosperity in the coming year.

5. Craft Your Lantern Festival Decor

Get creative in this craft workshop led by three skilled artisans. Craft your own Chinese dragon, gold phoenix, or lantern to celebrate the upcoming Lantern Festival on the 15th day of Lunar New Year.

6. Dance and Feast on the Grand Finale

Date & Time: February 24 (Starting at 12 pm)

Participate in a dumpling eating contest, dance to traditional and K-pop music, and learn the art of lion dancing. This grand finale, taking place on the seventh day of Lunar New Year, will be a lively celebration for all.
