Outstanding achievements and contributions in BC gymnastics recognized at Burnaby celebration

October 25, 2023

Burnaby – Athletes, coaches, club representatives and volunteers from the BC gymnastics community gathered in Burnaby on October 14 for the 2023 Gymnastics BC Awards and Scholarships Night.

Presented by Sport Burnaby and held at the Element Vancouver Metrotown, about 200 people from across B.C. participated in the event to honour the talents, dedication and successes of the 2022-23 Gymnastics BC season. “It has been a remarkable evening,” said Nigel Loring, Gymnastics BC chief executive officer. “It’s just a fantastic venue for such a great occasion to celebrate the achievements of our gymnastics community here in British Columbia.”

Canadian athletes are making their mark in the sport with both national teams qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games. And B.C. gymnasts are a factor. “For sure, we’ve been a big contributor,” added Loring.  “It will be great to have B.C. athletes on the Olympic stage in 2024.”

As for the state of the sport in B.C., gymnastics is in good shape, according to Loring. “Gymnastics is thriving in British Columbia,” he said. “I think, post-pandemic, a lot of sports are seeing a resurgence from young people to participate in physical activity. Gymnastics is a foundational movement sport and sets the stage for young athletes to grow into any sport.”

Following the awards night, the next day, it was down to business with the 2023 Gymnastics BC Annual General Meeting taking place in the same venue with delegates from 69 member clubs representing 45,000 gymnastics members in the province.  “It’s been fabulous being here in Burnaby. We really appreciate all the support and the warm welcome we’ve had from the community.”
