TENUGUI are towels made of bleached cotton, approximately 34 cm wide and 90 cm in length. The word literally means “a hand-wiping cloth.” Tenugui were used for a remarkable number of purposes not only for wiping and cleaning, but also for wrapping and wearing, and even as advertising tools.
To meet the various needs of special occasions throughout the four seasons and the individual personalities of each owner, the Japanese developed a wide range of designs on the surface of the cloth. Some are elaborate while others are transparently simple. With over two hundred towels on display, this colourful exhibition demonstrates the endless creativity in Tenugui.

The National Nikkei Museum & Heritage Centre is a multi-use facility at the corner of Kingsway and Sperling in Burnaby, BC. Officially opened on September 22, 2000, the Centre houses the National Nikkei Heritage Centre and the Japanese Canadian National Museum. The Centre’s mandate is to promote a better understanding and appreciation by all Canadians of Japanese Canadian culture and heritage; and an awareness by all Canadians of the contribution of Japanese Canadians to Canadian society, through public programs, exhibits, services, publications, public use of the facilities and special events. In addition to offering its own programs, the NNM&HC has a number of rooms available for rent for many purposes including meetings, demonstrations, weddings, receptions, small conferences, and other special events.
